INSURANCE
The Insurance of cars in storage is a slightly tricky issue. The reason is that because of the Finance Services Act, we are unable to advise customers as to what to do. We can however say the following -
Unlike some storage companies, ALL CARS ARE FULLY INSURED WHILE IN OUR CARE. THIS MEANS WHEN THEY ARE STORED, TRANSPORTED AND DRIVEN BY US. They are insured against Fire, Theft and Accidental Damage.
Customers should discuss their insurance with their brokers and always inform their insurers that their car is being stored at the Automobile Storage Co.
If you wish to retain your own insurance, our own insurance is through major brokers AON. AON can offer VERY competitive quotes for cars in store with us. In order to get the benefits of our relationship with AON please contact us.
We
believe we offer the most affordable storage in the UK. We do, however, have to
add a premium for storing cars over £20,000 in value – this is a reflection of
the increase in insurance premium we have to pay. A special arrangement is in
place with AON whereby there is no additional premium for cars insured with
them. Do call us to discuss this.
TAX
There
is no need to keep your tax’d whilst in storage. You will
need to declare the car off-road and complete what the DVLA call a SORN
declaration. You get a refund on any paid tax as well! The form can be downloaded from
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012526
Do
note that the SORN declaration needs to be renewed annually. They fine you if
you don’t! You can do it on-line, but you will need to have either the reminder
they send to the registered address, or you will need the reference number off
the V5C – so remember to take a copy if you are going abroad. Details can be
found here
